6 Things I Refuse to Do as a Personal Stylist

As a London-based personal stylist, I work with women who want their wardrobes to feel simpler, more wearable and more reflective of their real lives.

A good personal stylist shouldn’t pressure you to buy more clothes or follow every trend. Instead, the goal is to help you build a wardrobe that works for your lifestyle, your body shape and your personal style.

If you spend any time on social media, you’d be forgiven for thinking personal styling is all about endless shopping hauls, huge wardrobes and a perfectly curated life.

In reality, most of the women who come to me for personal styling or a wardrobe edit are simply trying to make getting dressed easier. They’re juggling work, family, social plans and everything else life throws at them, and they want clothes that make them feel confident without overthinking it every morning.

Over the years I’ve developed a very clear idea of what actually helps people build a wardrobe that works and what doesn’t.

So here are six things I refuse to do as a personal stylist.

1. Dress you for a life you don’t live

One of the biggest mistakes people make when building a wardrobe is buying clothes for the life they wish they had rather than the one they actually live.

Beautiful heels for someone who walks everywhere. Tailoring for someone who works from home. Party dresses for a social calendar that mostly consists of school events and casual dinners.

When I work with clients during a wardrobe consultation, we always start with real life. How you spend your time, where you go during the week and what you genuinely need your clothes to do for you.

Once your wardrobe reflects your actual lifestyle, getting dressed becomes much easier.

2. Tell you to throw everything away

A good personal stylist shouldn’t make you feel like you need to start from scratch.

Most wardrobes already contain plenty of good pieces. Often they just need a fresh perspective, better combinations or a few thoughtful additions to bring everything together.

A wardrobe edit is really about understanding what you already own, identifying what works and filling any gaps. My job isn’t to replace your wardrobe. It’s to help you make better use of it.

3. Create unrealistic wardrobes

You don’t need hundreds of clothes to look stylish.

In fact, having too many options is often what makes getting dressed feel overwhelming. When wardrobes are full of random purchases or pieces that don’t work together, people end up wearing the same few outfits on repeat.

When I work with clients, the aim is to build a wardrobe that feels cohesive and easy to use. That might mean refining what you already have, identifying the key pieces you’re missing and creating outfits that work for everyday life.

4. Push trends that don’t suit you

Trends can be fun, but they shouldn’t dictate your entire wardrobe.

One of the most valuable things about working with a personal stylist is learning what actually suits your body shape, colouring and lifestyle. Once you understand that, it becomes much easier to decide which trends are worth trying and which ones you can happily ignore.

Personal style should feel like you, not like you’re wearing someone else’s wardrobe.

5. Pretend I’ve never made styling mistakes

Like most women, my style has evolved over the years. I’ve bought things that didn’t work, followed trends that didn’t suit me and held onto pieces I rarely wore.

That experience is actually what helps me guide other women now. Personal style isn’t about getting everything right the first time. It’s about learning what works for you and building confidence in your choices.

6. Tell you that you need loads of clothes

One of the biggest myths about style is that you need more clothes to look better.

What most people actually need is clarity. Knowing what suits them, understanding how to put outfits together and having a wardrobe where everything works.

When your wardrobe is built around versatile pieces that mix and match easily, getting dressed becomes quicker, easier and far more enjoyable.

How I Help Clients Instead

When clients book a personal styling session, wardrobe edit or personal shopping service with me, the focus is always the same: creating a wardrobe that works for your life.

That might mean refining what you already own, identifying the gaps in your wardrobe or helping you find a few key pieces that pull everything together.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s helping you feel comfortable, confident and like yourself in your clothes.
